Traxxas Slash 4X4 VXL: What VXL Means and Which Version to Buy

The Traxxas Slash 4X4 VXL is one of the most recognised short course trucks in RC, and the model people most often ask about by name. This page explains what the VXL badge actually means, how the 4X4 differs from the 2WD Slash, and which current version to buy.

What VXL means

VXL is Traxxas’s brushless power system — the Velineon motor and VXL-3s speed control. The alternative badge, XL, denotes the brushed system. In practice VXL means significantly more speed, better efficiency and a motor that does not wear out, which is why it commands a premium. Across our whole catalogue 96.4% of products stating a motor type are now brushless, so VXL is very much the mainstream choice rather than an exotic upgrade.

Slash 4X4 vs Slash 2WD

If it will be driven on grass or loose dirt, the 4X4 is worth the difference. On smooth hard-packed ground the 2WD is cheaper and arguably more instructive.

The full VXL 4X4 spec — Slash Ultimate 1/10 4WD VXL Clipless

Slash Ultimate 1/10 4WD VXL Clipless

This is the model most people mean by “Slash 4X4 VXL” — brushless Velineon power in the Ultimate 4WD chassis, with the clipless body mounting that removes the fiddly body clips. Note it requires a battery and charger, which is normal at this level.

  • Scale: 1:10
  • Drivetrain: 4WD

The big one — Traxxas Maxx Slash 4WD 6S

Traxxas Maxx Slash 4WD 6S

A 1:8 scale Slash on 6S power — a substantially larger and faster machine than the 1:10 cars above. This needs proper open space and is not a first RC.

The engine option — Traxxas Nitro Slash 1/10 2WD

Traxxas Nitro Slash 1/10 2WD

For anyone who wants the sound and the refuelling rather than battery charging. Nitro adds real maintenance — tuning, glow plugs, break-in — so treat it as a second vehicle, not a first.

  • Scale: 1:10
  • Fuel: Nitro
  • Drivetrain: 2WD

Why Traxxas, specifically

Traxxas has the widest range in our catalogue with 107 products, ahead of DEERC (48) and ARRMA (47). Product count is a proxy for parts support, not quality — but parts support is precisely what keeps a truck running for years rather than months. You can still buy components for Traxxas models released long ago, which is also why resale values hold up. See our RC brand rankings.

Frequently asked questions

How fast is the Traxxas Slash 4X4 VXL?

Traxxas quote speeds in the 60 mph range for the VXL 4X4 on appropriate gearing and battery. For context, the median advertised top speed across our 3,204-product catalogue is 37 mph, so this sits well into the specialist end — it needs open space.

What does VXL mean on a Traxxas?

VXL is the Velineon brushless power system (motor plus VXL-3s ESC). XL denotes the brushed alternative. VXL is faster, more efficient and lower maintenance.

Is the Slash 4X4 good for beginners?

The chassis is durable and forgiving, but VXL brushless power is a lot for a first RC. A newcomer is better served by something under 40 mph — see our beginner guide — or by the brushed version.

Does the Slash 4X4 VXL come with a battery?

Depends on the version. The Clipless Ultimate listed above explicitly requires a battery and charger; RTR bundles vary. Always check the listing before ordering.

Slash 4X4 or Slash 2WD?

4X4 for grass, dirt and mixed terrain. 2WD is cheaper and better for learning throttle control on hard-packed surfaces.
