RC Tanks: The Complete Guide to Radio-Controlled Armor

The World of RC Tanks

RC tanks combine the thrill of remote control with military history and tactical gameplay. Modern RC tanks feature realistic details like rotating turrets, working cannons (airsoft or infrared), smoke generators, engine sounds, and authentic camouflage paint schemes. Whether you want a museum-quality scale model or a battle-ready combat tank, this guide has you covered.

Types of RC Tanks

Infrared Battle Tanks

The most popular type for fun. These tanks fire infrared beams and have hit sensors — when you score a hit on an opponent’s tank, their tank registers damage. After several hits, the tank “dies” and stops moving temporarily. Battle tanks are designed to fight each other, making them perfect for group play.

Airsoft Tanks

These fire small 6mm airsoft BBs from their main cannon. More realistic than IR but obviously require more safety awareness. Great for outdoor use on courses with terrain features.

Scale Display Models

Built for detail and realism rather than combat. These replicate specific historical tanks with incredible accuracy — working suspension, metal tracks, photo-etched details, and weathering effects.

What Makes a Good RC Tank

  • Metal tracks — Plastic tracks break; metal tracks last and look authentic.
  • Metal gearbox — Critical for durability. Plastic gears strip under the torque needed to move a heavy tank.
  • Smoke generator — Pumps realistic exhaust smoke from the engine deck. A crowd-pleasing feature.
  • Sound module — Engine startup, idle, movement, turret rotation, and cannon fire sounds add incredible atmosphere.
  • Proportional control — Better tanks let you control speed gradually rather than just on/off.
  • 360° turret rotation — The turret should rotate independently while the hull moves.
  • Barrel recoil — The cannon barrel kicks back when fired. A satisfying detail.

Top RC Tank Brand: Heng Long

Heng Long dominates the RC tank market. They produce a massive range of 1/16 scale tanks covering WWII, Cold War, and modern vehicles. Their tanks come in multiple upgrade tiers — from basic plastic-tracked versions to full-metal “ultimate” editions with steel suspension, metal turret, and advanced electronics.

Popular Heng Long models include:

  • Tiger I — The iconic WWII German heavy tank. A best-seller.
  • M1A2 Abrams — Modern US main battle tank. Desert camo looks incredible.
  • T-90 — Russian main battle tank with reactive armor details.
  • Sherman M4A3 — Classic WWII American medium tank.
  • Leopard 2A6 — Modern German tank, one of the best in the world.

Tamiya RC Tanks

Tamiya makes premium RC tank kits that emphasize scale accuracy and build quality. Their 1/16 scale Full-Option tanks are the gold standard for scale enthusiasts, featuring four-channel DMD (Dual Motor Drive) systems, multi-color LED lighting, and sound units. Tamiya tanks are more expensive but the build quality and detail are unmatched.

RC Tank Combat: How It Works

Infrared tank combat is organized fun:

  1. Each tank has IR emitters in the cannon barrel and receivers around the hull
  2. When you press “fire,” the cannon launches an IR beam toward the target
  3. If the beam hits a receiver, the target tank takes damage (indicated by lights/sounds)
  4. Most systems allow 3-5 hits before the tank is “destroyed” and stops moving for 15-30 seconds
  5. After the timeout, the tank respawns with full health

You need at least two compatible tanks to battle. Many Heng Long tanks use the same IR system and can fight each other regardless of model.

Where to Run RC Tanks

  • Backyard — Perfect for tank battles. Add rocks and sticks for cover.
  • Parks — Flat grass areas work well for tank maneuvering.
  • Sand/dirt — Tanks handle loose terrain well and it’s more realistic.
  • Indoor — Carpet or hard floors work for smaller tanks.
  • Custom courses — Build terrain features from foam, wood, and plaster for ultimate battles.
