I won first place in pinewood derby
I actually built a pinewood car and I used a lightning blot designe and the mass was at the back and it got first place and it also got best designe and I had the groove perfect were the wind would be on my side and used graphight never failed

…back in the pre-internet days of the 1970's, the closely-guarded secret was to drill small holes into the underside of the car, approximately an inch forward of the rear axle. Then you poured molten lead (from fishing sinkers) into the holes. Because adding weight this way was illegal, you had to sand the top of the lead "plugs" flush with the wood surface, then keep adding coats of paint until it hid the plugs. I don't think cars were weighed or really scrutinized at all before placing them on the track. So we scouts learned that not getting caught cheating was the way to win.
